2020 iPhones could reportedly ship without charger or earphones

There could a substantial absence the next time you buy an iPhone, with reports suggesting that Apple could be ditching a few accessories from its packaging on the 2020 iPhones.

According to noted industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has been right on more than one occasion when it comes to these kinds of rumours, Apple may chose to ship this year’s new mobile devices sans charger and earphones.

Kuo tells 9to5Mac that this could begin with the new iPhone SE smartphones later this year, and then be adopted for the next iteration of iPhones that the company reveals towards the end of the.

This move, as Kuo explains has two motivations behind it, with the first being that Apple would have to manufacture less in order to ship the devices. There is also the added benefit that smaller packaging has, with it allowing more devices to ship at a time too.

The other motivation would be the environmental implications, with less plastic and non-biodegradable products being in circulation.

Taking a more cynical approach, given Apple’s recent upgrade to an 18W charger for the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max last year, the company could also use this opportunity to get more consumers to purchase the larger capacity battery for their 2020 iPhones.

It would be the first time that Apple has tried to be savvy when to accessories, with its MacBook Pro-compatible USB Type-C to Type-C often difficult to come by outside of Apple itself.

Sticking with chargers, Kuo says that Apple is also developing a 20W option for its new iPads, which are yet to be revealed, but whether those would be included with the purchase (which they really should be), remains to be seen.

As for earphones, given the popularity of wireless earphones, and the iPods in particular, ditching those accessories makes a lot of sense.

For now though, this remains a rumour, but we should have a better idea on whether it is true once the aforementioned SE devices begin shipping locally.
