Fujifilm ports webcam support to more cameras, with MacOS on the way

Last month we reported on Fujifilm and its rolling out of a feature for some of its X-Series mirrorless cameras that turned them into webcams for Windows 10 PCs or notebooks.

At the time this feature was only available on the company’s flagship cameras, as well as limited to Windows 10, but some additions are in the offing.

To that Fujifilm has added the X-T200 (pictured above) and X-A7 to that list of X-Series cameras, with firmware updates already available for download.

Perhaps more importantly though, the webcam functionality will soon be porting over to MacOS and won’t be restricted to Windows 10 alone. Fujifilm says this will happen in mid-July, although there is no definitive date for the rollout mentioned at this stage.

“Furthermore, based on the overwhelming response from our customers when we released FUJIFILM X Webcam for PC, we are pleased to announce, development of FUJIFILM X Webcam for macOS computers. The macOS version is due to be released in mid-July 2020,” the company explained in a blog post.

Hopefully when that happens, even more mirrorless cameras, as well as some compact options, are added to this, should they have the correct specifications.

For now, the list of X-Series mirrorless cameras that can be setup as webcams on Windows 10 via a USB connection are as follows:

  • X-H1
  • X-Pro2
  • X-Pro3
  • X-T2
  • X-T3
  • X-T4
  • X-T200
  • X-A7
  • GFX100
  • GFX 50S
  • GFX 50R.

With most press conferences and meetings happening virtually at the moment, making use of a proper camera to improve video quality, could prove welcome.

Either way it’s clear that Fujifilm and Canon are using lockdown and quarantine to find other ways for people to use its mirrorless cameras.
