Live news leaves Showmax today

There are moments where we forget that we’ve been under lockdown restrictions since the end of March, but those moments quickly dissipate.

Given how much time had passed since March we’d grown accustomed to watching live news on Showmax, but today that ride ends.

An email sent to subscribers this week reads, “We just wanted to give a quick heads-up that live news channels will soon be leaving Showmax. The last day will be 30 June 2020.”

While we always knew this was temporary we had grown rather attached to a nice continuous stream of live news. Local news broadcasters including SABC News and Newzroom Afrika were a part of the offering and proved particularly useful to watch President Cyril Ramaphosa address the nation.

Perhaps it’s a sign of old age but we will miss live news on Showmax.

Will Showmax broadcast live news in future? The firm isn’t really sure.

“As lockdown is now easing and slowly we’re getting back to some kind of new normal, we’re going to be discontinuing the news service. We’ll, of course, keep an eye on developments and if the circumstances change we’ll do our best to step in again and play our part,” Showmax said in an email to subscribers.

While it doesn’t quite compare, the SABC News YouTube channel provides short snippets of news that are uploaded throughout the day. The Newzroom Afrika YouTube channel similarly uploads regular bulletins throughout the day to give you your news fix.

We live in hope that live news returns to Showmax, it was rather convenient being able to switch from a Silicon Valley binge to a presidential address without leaving the couch.
