The LG Velvet 5G launches locally tomorrow and the price may surprise you

Earlier today MTN unveiled its new 5G network, with one of the devices listed as running on the carrier’s infrastructure being the LG Velvet 5G. To date we’ve seen the South Korean firm reveal its latest offering to the globe, but now we now when it will be available locally, and how much it is expected to cost.

To that end the recommended price tag on the Velvet 5G may surprise you, with LG listing it at R13 499 (RRP). While precise contract pricing is unknown for now, LG says this should translate to around R699 per month on a 24-month contract.

That’s quite a bit less than what you’re paying for 5G-supporting smartphones released this year, with most crossing the R20k mark.

“We’re excited to introduce the LG VELVET 5G to South Africa, not just because it is an exceptional 5G smartphone, but because of the unique value it presents through our new design language,” notes Deon Prinsloo, Mobile GM of LG Electronics South Africa.

“With its new name, LG VELVET 5G promises an unexpected departure for LG Mobile in devices that have a totally revamped look and feel,” he adds.

So what is the Velvet 5G packing?

Well its support of 5G comes via the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 processor. This is paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. Up front a 6.8″ (2860×1080) display is present, with a trio of cameras on the rear – 48MP standard, 8MP wide-angle and 5MP depth sensing. The front facing option features a 16MP lens to take care of selfies.

As LG has done with some of its recent premium devices, a Dual Screen (pictured in header) is also available for purchase, featuring the same 6.8″ sized display, as well as the ability to support applications that make the most of the increased screen real estate. The Dual Screen can be purchased separately for R4 299 (RRP).

As for where and when you’ll be able to purchase the new LG Velvet 5G, they go on sale from 1st July via MTN and Vodacom customers can buy it after 7th July.

If you go with the former, MTN will add a R1 200 Takealot voucher for those you purchase the device in the month of July. For Vodacom clients, the first 500 to buy the device will get the aforementioned Dual Screen bundled with it.
