A Kingdoms of Amalur remaster has popped up out of nowhere

If you had “Kingdoms of Amalur returns” on your 2020 bingo card pat yourself on the back and go buy a lottery ticket. The much maligned game has, seemingly out of nowhere, popped up again as a remaster.

Some people have discovered that a new game titled Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has popped up on the Microsoft Store without much word from those involved.

“The hit RPG returns! From the minds of the bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston, comes Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. Remastered with stunning visuals and refined gameplay Re-Reckoning delivers intense, customizable RPG combat inside a sprawling game world,” reads the store page description.

For anyone a bit out of the loop here Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning came out in 2012 and was the maiden effort of 38 Studios. It was an attempt to launch a universe of games including an MMO, and was backed by big creative names like R.A. Salvatore and Todd McFarlane.

Despite a generally positive reception things quickly became undone for the studio and the IP with the latter eventually coming into the ownership of THQ Nordic.

We highly recommend the short form documentary on the topic by Gvmers because the story is much more complex, and interesting, than that.

As expected THQ Nordic is listed as the publisher for the remaster and the developer is credited to Kaiko, a studio which has been involved in several remasters in recent years.

As for what’s changed in the remaster the only mention we can see is of “improved graphical fidelity”. If that’s the only change it will be a missed opportunity because the original game was a great base that had some problems like supreme repetition and a lack of challange.

Other than that there are some screenshots provided (see some of them in the gallery below).

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is stated to be released in August this year. The Microsoft Store listing has it only pegged for the Xbox One, so we’ll need to wait and see if it’s available on other platforms.
