AWS and Slack partner up to offer developers deeply integrated services

Competition among applications which assist teams in working remotely has become fierce since the COVID-19 pandemic began spreading through the world.

While the focus has been videoconferencing applications, this week Slack has made a move that may put it in a rather powerful position.

The communication app has announced a multi-year partnership with Amazon, specifically, Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Slack said in a letter to investors that the partnership will help development teams communicate more efficiently and agile as Slack integrates AWS resource management into its app.

As you may be aware, Slack features integrations with other applications that allow you to manage them from within Slack. For instance, one can create and tag a user in Trello cards from within Slack.

“Strategically partnering with AWS allows both companies to scale to meet demand and deliver enterprise-grade offerings to our customers. By integrating AWS services with Slack’s channel-based messaging platform, we’re helping teams easily and seamlessly manage their cloud infrastructure projects and launch cloud-based services without ever leaving Slack,” said Slack co-founder and chief executive officer, Stewart Butterfield.

The firm also announced that it would migrate Slack Calls – that’s video and voice – to Amazon Chime.

Of interest to businesses who are required or simply prefer to keep their data local, Slack will now be able to offer them data residency. This is the ability to choose which country or region your data is stored. This is particularly important for companies who deal with sensitive data.

The full list of integrations as outlined by Slack follows on below.

  • Amazon Chime infrastructure with Slack Calls
  • AWS Key Management Service with Slack Enterprise Key Management (EKM)
  • AWS Chatbot integration with Slack
  • Amazon AppFlow integration with Slack

All of these integrations are primed for developers and we have to admit that it’s a rather clever business move from Slack. What better way to lure developers to your platform than to make their jobs just a bit easier.

Whether these AWS integrations prove alluring enough for developers remains to be seen but for now, good moves Slack, keep it up.
