Honda suffers cyberattack forcing it to suspend operations for a day

Japanese car maker Honda has said that it has suffered a cyberattack which lead to it taking down a number of systems globally to mitigate the damage.

While the exact type of cyberattack Honda fell prey to is unclear the firm was unable to access its servers, emails and other internal systems.

Honda confirmed to the BBC that work at its UK plant, as well as operations in North America, Turkey, Italy and Japan had been suspended as a result of the attack.

At this stage it doesn’t appear as if any customer or employee data was compromised during the attack.

“Honda has experienced a cyberattack that has affected production operations at some U.S. plants. However, there is no current evidence of loss of personally identifiable information. We have resumed production in most plants and are currently working toward the return to production of our auto and engine plants in Ohio,” Honda said in a statement sent to Engadget.

This incident highlights the need for good cybersecurity in the automotive space. With so many more cars being connected online and even more as autonomous vehicles reach critical mass, cyber attacks on brands such as Honda are incredibly concerning.
