How to filter MAC addresses with a TP-Link router

MAC Address Filtering is a special security feature through which you can use the MAC Address of a device to determine its access to the network. It is special security that protects your router and internet connection even when you have not set up a password.

MAC Address is a special address, consisting of digits and alphabets. It is assigned to each network card. You can use the MAC Address of a device to filter that device to permit or deny its access to the network.

MAC Filtering feature consists of blacklists and whitelists. MAC addresses that are whitelisted are allowed to connect to the network through any port while the blacklisted MAC addresses are denied to connect to the network on all ports.

How to find the MAC Address of connected devices?

Here is how you can find the MAC Address of the connected devices to your TP-Link Router:

  1. Open your preferred web browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox.
  2. In the URL bar, type http://tplinkwifi.net or the default gateway address for TP-Link Routers, which is typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and press Enter.
  3. A login window will appear. You will have to enter the login username and password to continue. The default username and password, both are “admin”.
  4. You will be now logged in to the Admin Panel of your TP-Link Router.
  5. Now, go to IP & MAC Binding->ARP List.
  6. Here you will find the MAC Address of all the devices connected to your router.

How to set up MAC Address Filtering on TP-Link Router?

Now that you have figured out how to access the admin panel of your router follow these steps to set up the MAC Address Filtering on your TP-Link Router:

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. In the address bar, type http://tplinkwifi.net or the default gateway address for TP-Link Routers, http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.1.1 and press Enter.
  3. A login page will appear. You will have to enter the login username and password to continue. The default username and password, both are “admin”.
  4. You will be now logged in to the Admin Panel of your TP-Link Router.
  5. Go to Wireless > Wireless MAC Filtering.
  6. Click on Add New.
  7. Enter the MAC Address of the that you want to allow or deny to access the internet. Also, enter the description and make sure that the status is set at Enabled. Click on Save. (You can add this for other devices one by one)
  8. Now, make sure that you Enable the Wireless MAC Filtering Feature and also set the Filtering Rules, whether you want to Allow or Deny the devices to your router.

Pro Tip: If you have mistakenly filtered out your main MAC address (which happen a lot of times) you may either log in to the router configuration page and disable the settings. However if you don’t have a secondary device you may proceed to reset your router to default factory settings which will revert all the changes you made that includes your network name (SSID) and password.
