Sony postpones PS5 event to “allow more important voices to be heard”

Following the tragic murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week, protests have erupted around America as citizens call for an end to police brutality and racial profiling.

At the weekend protests ramped up to a point where President Donald Trump briefly entered an underground bunker at the White House.

While America was burning Sony was due to host a PlayStation 5 event later this week but the company has announced that, in relation to what is happening in the US, games simply aren’t worth changing the conversation for.

“We have decided to postpone the PlayStation 5 event scheduled for June 4,” wrote PlayStation in a statement posted to Twitter.

“While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard,” the firm continued.

Sony is not the only tech firm that appears to be in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Microsoft has been using its Twitter account to “amplify voices from the Black and African American community at Microsoft”.

So, while gamers may be slightly disappointed in having to wait a bit longer for PS5 news it’s not like we haven’t been waiting for a while already so what is a few more days?

In truth we’re proud to see the likes of Sony taking a stand on a cause that it believes in and while it’s not the only firm to do so with Xbox, Activision Blizzard and Bungie having all expressed support for the movement.
