South African schools reopening moved to 8th June

At the 11th hour the Department of Basic Education (DBE) announced that Grade 7 and 12 pupils would only be required to return to schools on 8th June rather than today as originally planned.

The announcement came through late on Sunday evening following the a meeting with the Council of Education Minister (CEM) which has received three reports regarding the readiness of schools.

“All three reports converged on the fact that a substantial number of schools would not be ready for the reopening tomorrow, albeit tremendous progress had been made by most provinces, which overall reflected 80 percent state of readiness. CEM was concerned that, in some provinces personal protective equipment for learners in particular, had not been received; and some schools had not been made ready for the arrival of teachers and learners,” reads a statement from CEM.

As such, schools will not reopen today but will instead reopen on Monday 8th June.

In this week then teachers must be trained on the proper health, safety and social distancing protocols while preparing school facilities for the arrival of learners.

The DBE notes reports that some learners at boarding schools have already arrived at school as up until late on Sunday evening, schools were meant to reopen today.

As regards those learners the DBE says that they should be orientated regarding the reopening of schools.

Minister Motshekgais expected to hold a media briefing this morning at 11:00 to discuss the readiness of schools.
