Welp, they’re making a Pokémon MOBA

Last week Pokémon Smile, Café Mix and New Snap were all announced in a special livestream. After those announcements we learned that yet another livestream would happen, and now it has revealed Pokémon Unite, a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA).

After delving into the realms of dental hygiene, puzzles and photography last week, it’s the turn of the multiplayer online battle arena.

While called a “team battle” in the stream – which you can still watch below – Pokémon Unite is a MOBA.

To make the title Pokémon has teamed up with the videogame equivalent of the boogeyman in Tencent, specifically its company TiMi Studios. TiMi is a massive name in the mobile gaming space having worked on titles like Call of Duty: Mobile and Arena of Valor.

Tencent also owns a majority of shares in Riot Games, the creators of League of Legends.

As for how Unite plays, it focuses on two teams of five Pokémon fighting over scoring areas on the map’s lanes. Wild Pokémon can be defeated while doing this to score points. We assume this is the equivalent of creeps.

The Pokémon controlled by players start off the game at level one and then gain experience during the battle, eventually evolving and learning new attacks, including an extra powerful “Unite” attack.

You can see how this all works in action thanks to a game of Unite being played during the stream. if you’re not a fan of a canned game being commentated over like it’s a world changing event, maybe mute that part of the video.

Pokémon Unite has no release date at the time of writing, but will be a “free to start” title on the Nintendo Switch, Android and iOS. Free to start is Pokémon’s way to say it will be free to download with microtransactions.
