You can decorate your cockpit with bobble heads in Star Wars: Squadrons

After being revealed with no actual gameplay EA has dumped a load of new information on us about Star Wars: Squadrons, with customisation and unlocks being particularly interesting here.

Anyone afraid that the publisher is going to repeat the flaming dumpster fire of microtransactions that was Star Wars: Battlefront 2 can rest easy. The recently released gameplay trailer, embedded below, confirms that all unlocks are obtainable by simply playing the game.

This doesn’t mean that microtransactions won’t be included, but it does at least seem to indicate that things will be fairer this time around.

As for what’s available to unlock we’re shown a wide range of visual customisation for Starfighters and their pilots. Speaking of the latter at about two minutes 44 seconds into the video we’re pretty sure that’s Emma Watson.

Oh, and there’s also bobble heads with an Ewok version shown off.

It’s not just visuals that can be changed with unlocks, however, as your Starfighters’ components are included here.

As for the gameplay itself there’s a large focus on the first person view and using the actual modelled instruments in the cockpits instead of a traditional HUD.

Eight ships are confirmed for the game – two of each class with one going to each side of the conflict:

  • Fighters: TIE Fighter and X-Wing
  • Interceptors: TIE Interceptor and A-Wing
  • Support: TIE Reaper and U-Wing
  • Bombers: TIE Bomber and Y-Wing

It’s a bit funny that every ship here is either a TIE variant or named after a letter.

Regardless these ships will be used in the singleplayer which seems to be centred around the creation of a Starhawk-class battleship, or in multiplayer.

The two multiplayer modes shown off are dogfights and fleet battles. Dogfights look to be your standard deathmatches while fleet battles are multi-stage conflicts with the ultimate goal of destroying the opposing side’s flagship.

Star Wars: Squadrons is planned for release come 2nd October 2020 on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. VR will be supported on PC and PlayStation 4.
