Running Zoom on a Windows 7 machine? Update now

Zoom continues to be the gift that keeps on giving insofar as cybercrime goes though we must commend the firm on how quickly it springs to action regarding issues of cybercrime.

Case in point is a vulnerability discovered last week.

0patch (pronounced zero patch), a firm which creates and distributes micropatches for software reported last week that it had discovered a vulnerability in Zoom.

That vulnerability would have allowed an attacker to execute arbitrary code on a target’s computer where Zoom for Windows is installed. The victim would need to perform an action such as opening a document file from within Zoom. Given the high number of Zoom meetings taking place, getting somebody to click a link they shouldn’t is a trivial task.

The good news is that this vulnerability only affects the Windows 7 operating system and older. The bad news is that, according to Net Marketshare, Windows 7 is still the second most popular operating system in the world accounting for 27.41 percent of installs as of June 2020.

While 0patch issued a micropatch for this issue, Zoom has already updated its client for Windows so to protect yourself you would simply have to update Zoom to the latest version.

That update – version 5.1.3 (28656.0709) – can be found here and we recommend you update as soon as possible if you are using Zoom on Windows 7.
