Why is everyone on the internet talking about cake?

If you’ve been anywhere on the internet recently, especially Twitter, you may be confused by the vast amount of talk, videos, pictures and gifs of cake.

Unlike some more niche internet discussion this one is rather easy to explain. For years now bakers and confectionery artists have been creating cakes which look like everyday objects, only to bust out a knife and cut into their creation revealing it to be cake all along.

While this has been going on for a long time it has recently become popular thanks to certain edited videos, especially the one by the account Tasty embedded below:

From this many people have perpetuated the joke that anything in your life could actually be a cake. You, your loved ones, even the planet could be cake.

An interesting parallel to this series of jokes is the one from Portal and the now infamous and tired line “the cake is a lie“. The video from Tasty also features a cake shaped like a toilet roll, something of a symbol for 2020 after people horded it in droves fearing a shortage at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

An example of this is our header image which is taken from this video by channel Sugar High Score published back in March – long before this new cake craze but squarely within the whole toilet paper kerfuffle.

Below are some of the interesting takes and jokes from the internet that have garnered some notoriety recently.
