Samsung debuts new Galaxy Z Flip 5G with a $1449 price tag

Earlier today Samsung revealed its latest foldable device in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G.

The updated foldable clamshell phone was rumoured to be in the works, but like a lot of forthcoming mobile hardware, was expected to be unveiled by Samsung at its Galaxy Unpacked event on 5th August.

Either way, it has broken cover, so now we can through what Samsung has upgraded on this model to distinguish it from the model it debuted last year.

As the name would suggest, this variant supports 5G, and would be the first foldable phone to do so in South Africa, should it be launched, with the Huawei Mate X yet to see the light of day locally.

This comes via the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus, which is slight step up on the processor found on the previous model. That is about it, looking through the specs sheet of the device, with the same 6.7″ Full HD+ display (when unfolded), along with 1.1 Super Amoled cover display, dual 12MP cameras on the rear, 8GB RAM and 256GB of onboard storage.

Samsung has also thrown in a few more features that make use of the foldable design, such as Flex Mode, which changes the UI and display setup of the device depending on how unfolded it is. Whether this is a Z Flip 5G exclusive, remains to be seen.

In terms of colour options, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will come in Mystic Grey or Mystic Bronze, found in the header image above, with both options available to purchase in select markets from 7th August.

We’ve reached out to Samsung Mobile South Africa on local details, and will update on pricing and availability when confirmed, but Stateside the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will cost a recommended $1 449.99 (~R23 772).

If the form factor of this offering does not do it for you, Samsung is also reportedly readying a second iteration of the Galaxy Fold for debut, which is expected to happen at the aforementioned Galaxy Unpacked event on 5th August.
