htxt.africast – Video calling is not enough for virtual conferences

Following a week with no loadshedding we were feeling rather perky as the weekend approached.

That good mood was cut short following two livestreams on Thursday, however.

The first was the Xbox Games Showcase which, true to its name, showed off a few titles you can expect to hit the Xbox Series X when it lands later this year. While the showcase featured the likes of Halo Infinite, Forza and Destiny 2: Beyond Light, there wasn’t all that much that caught our attention.

Later on Thursday evening President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed South Africa. That addressed announced that public schools would close on 27th July for four weeks, with the exception for Matrics and Grade 7 learners. The rest of the address focused on corruption during lockdown, and the measures in place to tackle that.

For the meat and potatoes of this week’s africast we’re talking about online conferences, webinars and panel discussions.

These have moved online for the most part, but with varying degrees of success. We touch on some conferences that did incredibly well, while unpacking why others are so bad.

With the “new normal” here to stay, it’s worth considering how to host an event online, effectively.
