Amazon’s Dash Carts lets shoppers checkout sans cashier

Amazon has been pioneering the cashierless shopping experience for a couple of years now. It started with its Go stores being tested out in select cities in the US, and now the company has extended its vision to shopping carts. To that end the tech giant revealed its new Dash Cart concept earlier this week.

Still to be rolled out to the public, this tech-laiden shopping cart allows users to go to a grocery store, fill up their trolley and pay for their purchases without having to interact with cashiers.

How the items purchased will get from the store to your car and home, is unclear, but it looks like the Dash Cart could prove a boon as far as social distancing and limiting physical interactions while grocery shopping goes.

As for how it works, Amazon explains that a mix of sensors and computer vision are at work here.

“The cart uses a combination of computer vision algorithms and sensor fusion to identify items you put in the cart. When you exit through the store’s Amazon Dash Cart lane, sensors automatically identify the cart, and your payment is processed using the credit card on your Amazon account,” the company points out.

“The cart has some convenient features for grocery shopping, including a screen at the top where you can access your Alexa Shopping List to check items off and view your subtotal. In addition, every cart is equipped with a coupon scanner where you can quickly apply store coupons as you shop,” it adds.

If you’re planning to use the Dash Cart anytime soon, you’re likely going to have to wait awhile. This as Amazon has it slated for testing at one of its grocery stores in Woodland Hills, California, later this year.

Whether Amazon is planning for a wider rollout or potentially using these Dash Carts in Whole Food stores in the US, is still to be determined, but for now the offering is designed for small-to-medium shopping trips.

“Amazon Dash Cart is specifically designed for small- to medium-sized grocery trips and fits two grocery bags. You can shop our entire grocery selection using the cart,” the company outlines.

As such this solution is still in its early stages, but there is certainly scope for expansion in our view.
