Bolt launches more affordable Bolt Go service in South Africa

Bolt has announced a new affordable offering it calls Bolt Go.

While rides will cost 20 percent less than regular Bolt rides, the real draw of Bolt Go is that it opens the service up to more drivers.

With Bolt Go, drivers with a hatchback will be able to access the Bolt platform for the first time.

“Smaller hatchback cars are less expensive to purchase, have lower maintenance costs, and are more fuel-efficient to operate than Bolt’s regular larger sedan cars. These lower operational costs also enable Bolt Go fares to be significantly more affordable,” country manager for Bolt in South Africa, Gareth Taylor said in a statement.

Bolt says that it will launch Bolt Go in “secondary provincial cities and towns” with a launch in large urban areas planned, but not detailed at this stage.

The ride hailing platform says that drivers with a hatchback will be restricted to using Bolt Go but drivers with a sedan may use Bolt Go during quieter periods.

The Bolt Go category is open to standard hatchback cars in good condition with low mileage, that pass a 45-point safety inspection and that seat at least four passengers in addition to the driver. Bolt anticipates that popular models will include the likes of Volkswagen Polo Vivo, Datsun Go and Toyota Etios.

Drivers who want to join Bolt will still need a Professional Driving Permit and have to pass a criminal background check before they join. As we are still facing the COVID-19 pandemic, safety precautions have to be followed for all trips as well.

“Our focus is on the thousands of South African drivers who rely on Bolt to connect them with passengers and earn a steady income – and enabling them to continue to earn that income to care for their families and loved ones,” Taylor concluded.
