Hackers accessed Twitter DMs of 36 accounts in last week’s hack

Last week Twitter was attacked and hackers managed to gain access to 130 accounts.

Since the incident Twitter has been in investigation mode and the latest developments reveal that more information may have been gleaned during the hack.

“We believe that for up to 36 of the 130 targeted accounts, the attackers accessed the DM inbox, including 1 elected official in the Netherlands. To date, we have no indication that any other former or current elected official had their DMs accessed,” said Twitter in a statement.

What’s more is that eight accounts had their archive, known as Your Twitter Data, downloaded.

“We are reaching out directly to any account owner where we know this to be true. None of the eight were verified accounts,” said Twitter.

The social network says it will not disclose the names of the eight accounts where data was downloaded.

“We’re acutely aware of our responsibilities to the people who use our service and to society more generally. We’re embarrassed, we’re disappointed, and more than anything, we’re sorry,” the platform wrote in a blog post last week.

Whether there is more to uncover remains to be seen, but we hope that this incident has more companies reassessing their cybersecurity and protections.
