Western Digital reveals refreshed WD_Black lineup for SA

Games are getting better. Whether it be higher levels of detail, longer amounts of gameplay or more intense graphics, and that’s a great thing. It does, however, come at the cost of storage, which means regular upgrades or expansion of storage on whatever system you utilise becomes increasingly important.

For the PC and Xbox crowd, Western Digital recently refreshed its WD_Black lineup, and now the new HDDs and SSDs are being made available locally. Among the new offerings, WD_Black has included an industry-first with “SuperSpeed” USB, clocking up to 20Gb/s data transfer rates, as well as featuring a USB 3.2 gen 2×2 port design.

The five new products, four HDD and one SSD, also build upon top-tier performance of the WD_Black SN750 NVMe SSD (pictured above).

To that end, Western Digital says these new devices have been thoughtfully designed and purpose-built to address storage challenges. In particular the sacrifice that often has to be made about picking and choosing between which games to keep on hand, with many surpassing the 100GB file size.

Among the five new devices, Western Digital has added some value as for as Xbox players are concerned.

“By teaming up with Microsoft, some of the new solutions offer up to three months of membership of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to give gamers access to a curated library of over 100 great games to discover on console and PC, as well as all the benefits of Xbox Live Gold,” the company explains.

The WD_Black P50 SSD.

The five new WB_Black storage solutions are as follows:

  • WD_Black P10 HDD Game Drive – Up to 5TB and holds up to 125 games.
  • WD_Black P50 SSD Game Drive – Up to 2TB with speeds of up to 2Gb/s.
  • WD_Black D10 HDD Game Drive – Up to 8TB for a capacity of up to 200 games.
  • WD_Black D10 HDD Game Drive for Xbox One – Up to 12TB with free three-month Game Pass Ultimate membership.
  • WD_Black P10  HDD Game Drive for Xbox One – Up to 5TB and a free two-month Game Pass Ultimate membership.

All of the HDDs listed above come with limited three-year warranties and the SSD has a five-year one.

As for when you’ll be able to purchase them, Takealot is the first online retailer to stock later this month, with Incredible Connection and others to follow in August.

With regard to recommended pricing for the HDDs, which is dependant on the retailer, the The WD_Black P10 Game Drive comes in capacities of 2TB to 5TB and ranges from R1 799 to R2 949. The WD_Black P10 Game Drive for Xbox One comes in capacities of 3TB for R2 305. The WD_Black D10 Game Drive 8TB capacity is R4 715, with the WD_Black D10 Game Drive for Xbox One 12TB capacity priced at R7 049.

Western Digital notes that the SSD sporting is expected in Q4 this year, so no word on price or availability just yet, but it is on its way.
