Google Play Music will begin shutting down in September

If you have been a long time user of Google Play Music, you’re likely aware that the service is coming to an end, being replaced by YouTube Music instead. Said shutdown is happening at the end of this year, but Google has confirmed that the final stage of the shutdown process will begin in September.

Users will still have until the year’s end to transfer their data on Google Play Music over to YouTube Music, or another platform that they have in mind.

Australia and New Zealand will be the first two countries that will experience the start of the shutdown process, with the rest of the globe slated for October, where the app will no longer be functional.

While the functionality will be gone, users will still be able to access their data and either transfer it to YouTube Music, or extract it via Google’s Takeout tool.

It is advised that you transfer the data as soon as possible, as it will be purged after the end of December 2020, Google has confirmed.

This move is part of a larger plan from the company to make its users stream music exclusively. As Engadget points out, Music will be stripped from the Play Store following the Play Music shutdown, although a precise date for said change has not been outlined.

Once it happens, Google would not have a digital marketplace to purchase music, like Apple and Amazon do. As such, it remains to be seen if Google will be following the Spotify model in terms of how it handles streaming music moving forward.

Either way it looks like the era of truly owning music is slowly slipping away.
