Finally, some actual gameplay of Atomic Heart

Years after we were dazzled by its reveal we finally have a good look at combat in the Russian alternate history paranormal title Atomic Heart.

In the reveal, which is embedded below, the player is in a retro-futuristic Soviet facility which is some kind of exhibit still tended to by robots, some of which are cleaning up after giant bugs, and others which are trying to clean your clock.

We’ve known for a while that melee combat would be a big part of the game on top of firearms, but his gameplay focuses only on close combat with the player wielding some kind of bat weapon topped with two regenerating saw blades.

This culminates with a fight against the mini-boss Plyush against the backdrop of music from Mick Gordon. The last time we heard from Gordon, outside of the Doom Eternal debacle, was when he provided music for South African game Beautiful Desolation.

Overall things are looking rather nice. We’re seeing more and more of the game lately with developer Q&As and now this trailer, so we’re hopeful that things are on track as there have been large gaps of silence from this game in the past.

We’d also like to see some ranged combat, and the trailer completely teases us with that by started with that interesting looking gun you can see in the header image above.

Before you hit play below just keep in mind that the dialogue here is, appropriately, in Russian. Developer Mundfish has provided full subtitles in English and, strangely enough, Spanish. Click on the gear icon (options) and then select “subtitles/cc” and select your language of choice.

Atomic Heart is looking to release on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and the Xbox Series X, but no release date has been set just yet. We’re not sure right now if the game will launch on all those platforms at the same time, or a release is planned for the previous gen consoles with an upgrade to the new ones when they arrive.
