Pokémon starts its own podcast for competitive play

While competitive circuits may not be what you immediately think of when looking at the Pokémon franchise, it actually has three supported game systems with dedicated players and organised play. To further foster that scene, specifically during the pandemic, a new official podcast has sprung into life.

The rather unimaginative name of this is “Play! Pokémon Podcast” and the first episode is live and embedded below. It’s hosted on the official Pokémon YouTube channel as it features video of the people speaking.

Those people are host Jay Blake and a rotating cast of guests. Each guest represents one of the three competitive games supported: the trading card game (TCG), the mainline videogames (referred to as videogame championship – VGC) and the fighting game Pokkén Tournament DX.

While all three of these usually have in-person events and tournaments those, as well as the World Championships, were cancelled in April this year.

To allow willing players to still compete while social distancing the completely online Players Cup has been running for the past few months with its finals coming up soon. The Players Cup and the prospective winners of it are the main focus of this first episode of the podcast.

For those wondering the card game is possible to be played like this thanks to its outdated but usually functional online client.

We’ve listed to the podcast which clocks in at just over an hour. It’s rather good for what it is but it’s very sanitised and feels like a corporate product instead of anything from the community. This means that the audio and video are both high quality, but only the positive aspects of the tournament are discussed.

We know from playing the TCG that various problems plagued its portion of the Players Cup. This would have been discussed in a community podcast but there’s no mention of that at all here.

This is far from the first corporate podcast. Nintendo themselves resurrected the Nintendo Power brand in December 2017 as a podcast and it’s still going strong in 2020.

Still it’s nice for the powers that be to give more attention to the competitive scene now while it can’t continue as usual.
