Huawei Mobile SA says older phones will continue to receive Android updates

Earlier today we reported on the elapsing of temporary licences for US companies to have limited trade with Chinese firms. One such firm was Huawei, which brought into question the fate of its devices, and in particular the ones running Android as it pertained to updates and security patches. So to get clarity, we reached to Huawei Mobile SA and this is what the organisation had to say.

With regard to older devices running Android, the company says updates and security patches will continue as normal.

More specifically a Huawei representative told Hypertext that, “Huawei will continue providing system updates and security patches. All Huawei devices that come with Google Play pre-installed can continue using Google Play to download and update apps.”

“Our customers can keep receiving software updates and services thanks to the strength of the open source community and our own advanced R&D capabilities,” they added.

As it currently stands then, devices up until the Huawei P30 Pro, should be covered in terms of updates and patches.

Given that newer Huawei devices running HMS also hinge off of the Android operating system, we had a similar query on that front. Here, it also appears as if it’s business as usual for Huawei Mobile SA.

“For phones with Google Play installed out-of-the-box, all apps downloaded from Google Play and other Google apps will continue receiving updates. For phones that do not come with Google Play, new apps and updates can be managed through the pre-installed HUAWEI AppGallery,” the representative has explained.

Whether this will be the case for the foreseeable future, remains to be seen, especially as we have seen some of the turns that this ongoing saga has resulted in.

For now though, Huawei Mobile SA has seemingly reassured its local customers.
