More people at home doesn’t mean less need for surveillance storage

With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging on and lockdowns staying in place across the world – especially here in South Africa – people are spending more and more time at home.

It would be easy then to think that the need for surveillance, and storage of that surveillance footage, would be down during this time, but that would be a huge mistake.

While businesses move to employees working from home, existing offices full of assets remain with no one to watch over them. Streets which usually see foot and car traffic to deter criminals are now left alone. Homes which would be easy targets during working hours are now filled with families.

It’s worth arguing that, during these strange transitional times, surveillance is even more important than it was before. As always big shake ups like this provide opportunities for all manner of changes in society, but also for the less savoury members of that society to change how they operate and take advantage of those buildings, streets and people which may have had cameras perched on them before, but not now.

As always any system is only as strong as its weakest link, and your surveillance system isn’t worth anything if the place you store your footage isn’t up to snuff. In this regard Seagate’s SkyHawk drives should be your go-to choice.

This is because Seagate has created these drives from the beginning to work as surveillance storage. Instead of simply reusing tech of old to make something for the modern market, Seagate offers several features that make SkyHawk what you’re looking for.

First, of course, is raw storage. Between the SkyHawk and SkyHawk AI range, you can get single drive capacity from 1TB all the way up to 16TB. If you’re a one and done kind of person, or looking to save space on your server rack, these high density choices are for you, especially if you don’t need that much capacity and would actually like one of the lower size choices.

And what makes Seagate different is that they don’t want to just sell you what you don’t need. That’s why they’ve created this handy calculator which you can use to determine how many terabytes you need.

Plug in your number of cameras, FPS, hours of daily operation, number of days, video resolution and video quality. Let the calculator know what compression time you prefer and, there it is, an estimate of how much space you need and how many SkyHawk drives will satisfy your request.

Not only is the base SkyHawk range made for surveillance and 24/7 use, but SkyHawk AI drives are made with artificial intelligence systems in mind.

To that end AI drives offer the highest per drive capacity – 16TB – as well as support for 64 HD cameras and 32 additional AI streams. Again, you need every part of surveillance to be as strong as possible, and if your cameras and back end are getting smarter, so should your drives.
