Xiaomi says under-the-display camera tech expected to ship in devices later this year

Last year we saw a number of smartphone makers, Chinese ones in particular, push to get working prototypes of devices with under-the-display cameras revealed. One such firm was Xiaomi, and now the company has confirmed that the technology is ready for mass production, becoming available in market-ready devices later in the year.

As Xiaomi explains, this is in fact the third generation of the technology, with previous iterations now as refined as this latest one.

“The self-developed pixel arrangement used in Xiaomi’s 3rd Generation Under-Display Camera Technology allows the screen to pass light through the gap area of ​​sub-pixels, allowing each single pixel to retain a complete RGB subpixel layout without sacrificing pixel density,” the company noted in a blog post.

“Compared with other common solutions on the market, Xiaomi has doubled the number of horizontal and vertical pixels, achieving the same pixel density above the camera as on the rest of the display area. Thus, the area above the integrated camera demonstrates the same brightness, color gamut and color accuracy as the rest of the display,” it adds.

While Xiaomi’s blog post points out some of the technical elements of the technology, there is no mention of how it would be rolled out in a proper device. To that end, we’re still to find out whether this technology is limited to LCD or OLED screens, or what kind of resolution it can cater to.

Perhaps most importantly though, we still need to see what kind of selfies this under-the-display camera yields, outside of the test environments that Xiaomi has used to date.

There’s also the small question of when precisely consumers can get their hands on the device, with an official launch date and launch device yet to be mentioned.

Regardless, with Xiaomi devices available in South Africa, it will be interesting to see if the new phones will land locally before the year’s end too.
