Sony is latest manufacturer to add webcam support for its cameras

In the wake of COVID-19 and people having to work remotely, we’ve seen a significant rise in videoconferencing. While platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams have succeeded as a result, not all remote working setups are optimised for videoconferencing, which is why camera makers have been adding webcam support for better quality video calls.

The latest to do so is Sony, with the Japanese company now joining the likes of Canon, Fujifilm and GoPro in adding webcam support.

For now though, Sony’s Imaging Edge software is not compatible on all operating systems, working on Windows 10 only at the moment.

At this stage then, there is no word on when a version of the software will be made available for macOS users.

While that is a pity for Apple device owners, it is pleasing to see Sony has made the software compatible with a wider range of its cameras than some of its competitors, and not limiting it to mirrorless, DSLR or compact ones for example.

To that end, the company notes that the software will turn any mirrorless camera from the 2014 A7S model or newer, into a high-end webcam. The same applies for the 2015 A68 or newer in terms of DSLRs, as well as the RX100 IV on the compact cameras side of things.

Whether or not this porting of support will prove popular for those working from home, remains to be seen, but if like us, the quality of video calls for interviews or content creation is important to your business in the COVID-19 era, the software updates should prove welcome.

Either way, given the popularity of Sony’s compact and mirrorless offerings, the rollout of this webcam software will likely find some use.
