Stage 2 loadshedding planned from 8:00 on Friday

Earlier this week Eskom unexpectedly lost generating units at five of its power stations due to delays in readiness, with a further two also faltering. Unsurprisingly, the power utility announced that stage 2 loadshedding would take effect today from 8:00 until 22:00.

Unfortunately Eskom has not been able to return all of its generating units, which means the power utility has advised that stage 2 will start once again tomorrow, 14th August, from 8:00 until 22:00.

Eskom explains that it has returned four generating units, but that it is not enough to bring the nation’s power grid back to normal. While the utility continues to work to resolve the problem, it adds that continuing with stage 2 load shedding will assist in terms of preserving our emergency energy reserves of water and diesel.

Whether this means that the country will not be forced to move to stage 3, 4 or higher during the course of tomorrow, remains to be seen, but either way Eskom is asking South Africans to be conservative with their electricity use where possible.

As such it has advised that the constrained supply of power may continue into the weekend, which likely means South Africans will need to brace themselves for continued loadshedding and make the necessary preparations.

As always, we advise charging essential items and power banks when loadshedding is not in effect, as well as following the EskomSePush Twitter account and downloading the iOS or Android app in order to keep as up to date as possible.

With most South Africans on edge and suffering from cabin fever as a result of frustrating government lockdown decisions and amendments, loadshedding could not have come at a worse time.
