You can use your DualShock 4 controller on the PS5, but only for PS4 games

As we inch closer to the festive season release of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, more details about the next-gen consoles are emerging, detailing what can and cannot be done. In a recent Q&A blog, PlayStation looked at the issue of backwards compatibility for peripherals on the PS5, with some rather interesting information being outlined.

One aspect that caught our interest was the DualShock 4 controller, and the fact that it will function when paired with a new PS5 console.

Sony also outlined that third-party DualShock 4 controllers would work, as well as other officially licensed peripherals.

“Which existing PS4 peripherals/accessories will work on PS5?

  • Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
  • The Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets that connect via USB port or audio jack, will work on PS5 (the headset companion app is not compatible with PS5).
  • The DualShock 4 wireless controller and PlayStation officially licensed third-party gamepad controllers will work with supported PS4 games.
  • Both the PS Move Motion Controllers and the PlayStation VR Aim Controller will work with supported PS VR games on PS5.”

Before you start thinking that you won’t have to buy an additional DualSense controller, there is one caveat to the above, with Sony also pointing out that the DualShock 4 will not work with PS5-specific games.

“Will DualShock 4 work with PS5 games?

No, we believe that PS5 games should take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller,” the company’s FAQ explains.

As such a title like Godfall, or the Miles Morales expansion to Marvel’s Spider-Man, will necessitate the use of the DualSense controller.

How players will react to the news, remains to be seen, but given the focus on new gaming elements within DualSense that Sony has likely asked developers to integrate into the gameplay of upcoming titles, it kind of makes sense.

What it ultimately means for consumers though, is that a few more expensive peripherals will need to be bought should you wish to game solely with PS5 titles on your next-gen console.
