Eskom kicks September off with Stage 2 loadshedding

Ten of Eskom’s generation units have broken down in the last 48 hours and this means that loadshedding has returned.

In a power alert early on Tuesday, Eskom announced that Stage 2 loadshedding would kick in at 12:00 and continue through until 22:00 this evening.

“A generator each broke down at Arnot, Medupi, Lethabo, Matla power stations (sic), while two units each at Majuba, Camden and Tutuka power stations also broke down. This, together with the need to conserve emergency generation reserves, necessitates that loadshedding be implemented in order to protect the integrity of the system,” Eskom reported.

In total there is 16 223MW of capacity missing from the national grid. The bulk of that figure, 11 655MW is due to unplanned breakdowns while only 4 558W is out due to planned maintenance.

Eskom also says that because it infrastructure is unreliable and volatile “this constrained power system is expected to persist for the rest of the week”.
