Jozi Film Festival 2020 goes virtual this month with over 30 movies available on-demand

Like many events of late, the Jozi Film Festival 2020 has embraced virtual and headed online in the era of COVID-19 and lockdown. For the past eight years the four-day long event has taken place at venues across Johannesburg, but that is not tenable this year for obvious reasons.

That said, it looks like organisers are embracing digital for this year’s Jozi Film Festival, which is set to run from 17th to 20th September, later this month.

While making the majority of the event virtual, there are still limited physical screenings of films planned too, with The Bioscope Independent Cinema playing host. The venue of the Biocope recently moved from Maboneng to 44 Stanley, and organisers have arranged a competition for a private movie screening for the winner and friends.

“One lucky person stands a chance to win a private screening at The Bioscope (Sunday, 20 September at 12pm) – take a group of friends, your partner or the whole family! Follow Jozi Film Festival on social media to be in with a chance to win,” explains a press release regarding the Festival.

For those not quite ready to head back to physical cinemas, the Jozi Film Festival will be making more than 30 movies available for viewing online, on-demand. At a cost of $7 (~R117) you’ll get unlimited viewings for the festival films during 17th to 20th September, which translates to a very reasonable rate indeed.

Along with the aforementioned private screening, a few more prizes will be on offer during the Festival.

To that end there will be a competition where those who tweet (@JoziFilmFest) or Instagram (jozifilmfest) a photo of themselves enjoying one of the festival films at home. Upload your pic with #jozifilminvasion and the name of the film you’re watching and you’ll stand a chance to win a R500 Uber Eats voucher.

There will also be cash prizes for the best review of any of the films. Send your review (no more than 500 words) to lisa[at]jozifilmfestival[dot]co[dot]za by 23rd September and the top three reviews will earn their writers R1 000 each.
