End of an era as Vlambeer shutters

Of all the ways to celebrate the 10th anniversary of a developer, Vlambeer has really gone the most surprising route: by announcing that it will be closing doors.

As far as small studios go Vlambeer is likely one of the most influential being behind Nuclear Throne, Luftrausers, Super Crate Box and more.

The DNA and conventions in these games have gone on to propagate to other games both big and small. In the roguelike genre alone 2015’s Nuclear Throne is still a touchstone and parts of it can still be seen in games coming out in 2020.

In this sad news it is at least uplifting to know that Vlambeer going away isn’t because of financial strife or some big owner company forcing it to happen. It seems to be more of a natural death, according to the announcement.

There’s more positive news as the unreleased Vlambeer game Ultrabugs will still be released. Further support is also being looked into to support the studio’s older games too.

If you’ve not played Vlambeer’s games before you’re in luck because, to celebrate the 10th anniversary and the closure, there’s a sale going on on Steam. The games are all heavily discounted and don’t forget that Super Crate Box is still completely free.

Also free is the game Fffloood, an unfinished prototype that’s now available on itch.io.

“It’s not a sad day for us, but the happy conclusion to a whirlwind decade filled with screenshake. It feels like we’ve achieved what we set out to do – as a studio, as a voice, and as individuals, and we are extremely grateful for these past years,” Vlambeer adds.

We’re sure we’ll hear more of Vlambeer’s Rami Ismail and Jan Willem Nijman in the future, but for now it really feels like the end to a big part of the recent game community.
