Loadshedding moves to Stage 4 at 15:00

Bad news for a cold Wednesday, loadshedding is being upgraded, though the experience is definitely a downgrade.

From 15:00 on Wednesday afternoon loadshedding will shift from Stage 2 to Stage 4 and it will remain at Stage 4 until 22:00 this evening.

As of time of writing Eskom has cited “exceptionally high demand” as the reason for the increase in power cuts.

On Tuesday evening Eskom reported that 11 425MW of generating capacity was out of service due to unplanned breakdowns.

Eskom is yet to issue a statement regarding Stage 4 loadshedding but we will update this story as soon as it has.

Alternatively the EskomSePush app for Android or iOS smartphones delivers notifications regarding loadshedding directly to your smartphone.

UPDATE

Since publication Eskom has outlined why loadshedding has moved to Stage 4.

“Due to the continuing severe generation supply constraints caused by multiple unit breakdowns as well as the additional demand caused by the cold weather, Eskom will escalate the level of loadshedding to Stage 4,” a power alert states.

For even worse news, loadshedding is expected to persist through to the weekend.

While unplanned breakdowns have been reduced to 11 300MW, planned maintenance now accounts for 5 040MW missing from the grid.

It’s going to be a dark and cold week it seems.
