ZTE Axon 20 5G is world’s first phone with under-the-display selfie camera

Yesterday’s mobile news was dominate by the new Galaxy Z Fold2 and its massive R50k price tag, but Chinese smartphone maker ZTE had a significant announcement of its own. This takes the form of the new ZTE Axon 20 5G, which is the world’s first market-ready smartphone to feature an under-the-display selfie camera.

ZTE, along with other Chinese firms like Xiaomi, have been pushing to get this technology to market, and now it looks like ZTE is the first to do so.

The device is already on sale in China for 2 198 Yuan (~$321), but it remains to be seen which other regions ZTE plans to make it available. Like Huawei, ZTE is currently banned from working with US firms, so North America is out of the question.

Shifting back to the device itself, its under-the-display technology takes the form of a, “high transparency material that includes new organic and inorganic films.” Unfortunately there is no much more detail about this technology, so it remains to be seen how it translates to the in-hand experience of the ZTE Axon 20 5G, as well as the quality of selfie pictures it yields.

For now though,  ZTE has added some impressive components to this device. To that end the aforementioned display is 6.92″ and serves up a FullHD 2460×1080 resolution.

Added to this is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 5G processor, which is designed with premium mid-range devices in mind, as well as 6GB or 8GB of RAM, along with 128GB or 256GB storage.

Other elements include a 4 220mAh battery, 32MP selfie camera and a quartet of lenses on the rear (64MP, 8MP wide-angle, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensing).

With Xiaomi ramping up production of its under-the-display smartphones later this year, it should be interesting to see how those devices perform, especially as the Chinese firm has a South African presence. There’s also the likes of Oppo to consider, which too is pushing forward with the technology.
