The Galaxy A42 5G may be Samsung’s most important phone of the year

This week’s Samsung smartphone news has been dominated by the Galaxy Z Fold2 and its massive price tag. While the foldable device is indeed intriguing, we’re a bit more interested in the new device that Samsung showcased at the virtual version of IFA 2020 – the Galaxy A42 5G.

Having only just been revealed by the South Korean firm, pricing and availability for the A42 5G are still in the offing at the time of writing, but we think this may be one of Samsung’s most important devices of the year.

We say this as the recent smartphone shipment reports point to a massive decline in sales thanks to COVID-19. Add to that a general loss of appetite for overly expensive smartphones at the moment, and the mid-range Galaxy A42 5G might prove a very tempting device for savvy consumers who want a 5G experience, but don’t wish to pay the premium that it currently comes with.

That said, our theory hinges off of how much Samsung decides to retail the A42 5G for.

Another important factor is what kind of specifications Samsung opts for in this device. For now, we only know that a 6.6″ Super AMOLED display is up front, along with a screen notch to house the selfie camera. The megapixels of said camera are unknown at this stage, as is the details of the quartet of lenses on the rear.

The same goes for the processor, RAM, storage and battery size.

With South Africans already having access to an affordable 5G device in the form of the Huawei P40 Lite 5G, it looks like there could be another contender in that space with the Galaxy A42 5G.
