Why proactive surveillance is about more than just the visual

In the wake of COVID-19 and lockdown, many South Africans have had to embrace remote working as the new normal. While this means that there is a greater physical presence at home, it does not always translate to a higher level of alertness, as video calls, meetings and other distractions demand your attention.

Add to this increasingly bold criminal acts driven by the desperation of lockdown too, and it is becoming more important than ever to consider some sort of home surveillance solution.

While there are a number of local options available in terms of home surveillance, many are quite expensive, and often require the assistance of an “expert” to install as they prove too complex for you or I to operate.

Luckily RCT (a division of local tech distributor Rectron) has created a purpose-built UD5381 surveillance kit for the homeowners thanks to industry-leading hardware from Seagate.

Crucial additions

Apart from being easy to install, the RCT UD5381 kit also boasts a number of innovative features. One of the crucial among these lie in the four Turret Home Network Cameras (UT6306-H) that come in the kit.

Not only do these cameras offer a superb field of view and FullHD quality video playback, they also feature built-in audio detection that works from up to 10 metres away, as well as five-window motion detection to begin recording if any movement is sensed.

These are a superb set of features that are not simply industry-standard, and therefore help to separate the UD5381 kit from other offerings on the market. Added to this is a compact, weatherproof, metal design for the housing, ensuring it can suitably placed indoors or outdoors.

The combination of clear video and crisp audio, along with the added benefit of motion detection, means these cameras carry a trio of capabilities to assist in capturing any nefarious activity in and around your property.

It also means that homeowners are able to proactively monitor their properties safely in the knowledge that if ever one aspect of recording is compromised, there is always a backup in place to capture some form of evidence if needed.

Well stored

To accompany all the audio-video functionality of this surveillance kit, RCT has also looked to leverage the storage expertise of Seagate and its SkyHawk range of drives. These offerings are specifically designed for use in surveillance environments, and this particular kit comes with a 1TB SkyHawk HDD.

Capable of handling 24/7 recording, the SkyHawk storage solution is the perfect product to pair with the UD5381 kit.

Added to this is a nifty and equally easy to use RCT Viewer Mobile app, which is available for both iOS and Android smartphones via the App Store and Play Store respectively. This means that you can quickly monitor your surveillance setup whenever you’re not home to check on things in-person.

In an era where nothing can be taken for granted, you need to embrace a surveillance solution that goes beyond simple video and proactively adds motion detection and audio recording to the mix.
