COVID-19 in South Africa: 8th September

Loadshedding is still a reality for South Africans today, with it set to begin from 16:00 until 22:00 this evening. Another reality is COVID-19 in South Africa, but the latest statistics revealed by the National Department of Health (NDoH) makes for interesting reading.

More specifically it is the fact that only 854 new cases have been recorded in the past 24 hours. It is a surprisingly low figure, and one of the lowest we’ve seen in quite some time, with the average over the past couple of weeks being between 1 500 and 2 500.

It remains to be seen why so few new cases have been recorded, as is any theories that the infection rate for COVID-19 in South Africa is about to take a significant fall. As such, the statistics over the next couple of days should prove interesting, as we continue to fight the spread of the coronavirus.

Looking at the total number of cases for the country to date, they are currently sitting at 639 362, with 566 555 recoveries reported too. This translates to a recovery rate of 88.61 percent, which remains one of the aspects that the NDoH continues to highlight throughout lockdown.

As for the number of fatalities in the country, it now sits at 15 004, after 115 more deaths have been reported during the past day.
