Trump says he won’t budge on deadline for TikTok sale to US firm

Of the many sagas that US president Donald Trump is embroiled in at the moment, one of the latest is TikTok and his forcing of the social media platform to sell its business to a firm based in the United States.

When the executive order regarding this decision was outlined, so was a deadline. It was initially thought to be 15th September, but Trump’s administration later clarified that TikTok has until 20th September to get a deal done.

That deadline is non negotiable either, with Trump recently denying a request to have it extended.

According to CNN, Trump spoke on the matter while preparing to board Air Fore One, noting, “We’ll see what happens it’ll either be closed up or they’ll sell it.” The US leader added that there would be, “no extension of the TikTok deadline.”

It appears as if TikTok will have to acquiesce too, as the platform would prefer not to have this issue drag out in the courts.

“We far prefer constructive dialogue over litigation,” TikTok pointed out in an August blog post.

“But with the Executive Order threatening to bring a ban on our US operations — eliminating the creation of 10,000 American jobs and irreparably harming the millions of Americans who turn to this app for entertainment, connection, and legitimate livelihoods that are vital especially during the pandemic — we simply have no choice,” it adds.

As such it looks like a deal will indeed be struck, potentially by this time next week. As for which US firm will acquire TikTok remains to be seen, with Microsoft and Oracle being the two most notable companies linked to date.

Whether those firms are the right fit for TikTok is up for debate, but at this stage, the platform will likely have to take whatever deal it can in order to appease the Trump administration.
