PlayStation 5 starts at R9 999 and arrives 19th November

Following a positively delightful late-night livestream, we were given international pricing of the PlayStation 5.

After the stream we suspected we’d have to wait a while for local pricing but it turns out all we needed to do was sleep.

Local retailer Raru has listed both the PlayStation 5 all-digital version and PlayStation 5 with optical drive with an expected release date of 19th November.

The pricing follows below:

While the console with an optical drive is the same price as the Xbox Series X, the digital PlayStation 5 is quite a lot more expensive than the Xbox Series S (R6 999).

With that having been said it’s important to remember that the Xbox Series S is a slightly lower spec version of the Series X so pricing can be a lot more competitive.

As for the PlayStation it appears as if you will be getting the same performance on both the digital and disc versions of the console.

While dollar conversions of the pricing announced on Wednesday don’t convert exactly to R11 999 and R9 999, it’s important to remember that dollar pricing doesn’t include VAT.

There’s also the matter of import taxes which can be incredibly high on electronics.

With all of that having been said, South Africans now have a choice to make – Xbox or PlayStation?

We’re not quite ready to make that decision. Give us a call closer to launch day.
