HMD Global debuts new budget-friendly Nokia 2.4 and Nokia 3.4 devices

Yesterday afternoon HMD Global held its latest live streamed event for the new Nokia Mobile devices it was bringing to the fore. The new lineup of devices was rather small, with the Nokia 2.4 and Nokia 3.4 being revealed alongside the Nokia 8.3 5G that the company debuted earlier in the year.

The latter is being billed as the world’s first global 5G smartphone, given all the different 5G bands that it supports. It is also now being made available to purchase in selected markets, with South Africa expected to be one of them. At the time of writing, however, it is yet to be confirmed when the 5G device will land in SA, or indeed how much it will retail for.

There’s also a tie in with the marketing for the upcoming James Bond film, so expect to see more advertising for the 8.3 5G in November.

Shifting to the newer hardware, the 2.4 and 3.4 continue Nokia Mobile’s recent tradition of featuring great value for money devices, especially in the entry-level and mid-range. These latest offering lean more to the former category, but should still prove worth a look for any savvy Android smartphone users out there.

Starting with the 2.4, it features a 6.5″ HD+ display up front, with a dew drop notch to house the 5MP front facing camera onboard. It’s got a rear mounted fingerprint sensor to take care of biometrics, which sits just below the 8MP primary camera on the back.

Added to this is a massive 4 500mAh battery, which HMD Global claims to offer up to two days worth of battery life, along with 2GB or 3GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB internal storage and a MediaTek Helio P22 processor.

HMD Global also says it is Android 11 ready, which means it should get an update to the latest operating system once it is made available to other OEMs.

Shifting to the 3.4, HMD Global was particularly excited about this device during its live stream, especially given the components it sports given the price tag.

To that end a 6.39″ HD+ display is present, with a punch hole replacing the usual screen notch for the selfie camera. Speaking of which the front facing option is 8MP, with a trio of lens on the rear housed in a circular array – 13MP primary, 2MP depth sensing and 5MP ultra-wide.

Internally a 4 000mAh battery is present, but the same two days battery life is being claimed. There is also Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 processor doing the heavy lifting, with HMD Global noting that it is 70 percent more powerful than previous generations. For memory both 3GB and 4GB RAM options are available, along with 32GB or 64GB flavours for onboard storage.

As aforementioned, HMD Global are framing the Nokia 2.4 and 3.4 as great value for money devices, carrying recommended price tags of €119 (~R2 430) and €159 (~R3 127) respectively. What those will translate to when they land in SA, remains to be seen.
