Microsoft wants to add a wind-down feature to Teams

Working from home means a number of things. One can wear pajama bottoms all day or sneak off to the kitchen for a snack without anybody knowing.

It also means that you aren’t commuting to work and while we love that facet of working from home, it does mean that the lines between work life and home life begin to blur.

Having worked from home for far longer than a few months, we can attest to the fact that one has to consciously separate work and home life.

So, as they often do, a big tech company thinks it can address this problem by recreating the time to think that a commute so often gives us.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal, a Microsoft Teams update coming in 2021 will let users schedule virtual commutes at the beginning and end of their workday.

The feature will present a user with their “to-do list” for the day and ask that uncompleted jobs be moved to the next day. A question is then asked about how the day went with answers being represented by facial expressions. There is also reportedly an optional 10 minute guided meditation.

Microsoft has also said that it will explore further development of this feature post-launch suggesting it may let users recommend podcasts or books to each other.

While this sounds like a good idea in theory, should we really be encouraging folks to stay at their desks when their shift is over?

We’d argue that perhaps companies who are seeing their employees are strained should address this directly with employees rather than waiting for a feature in a video conferencing application to do it for them.
