60 min limit on Google Meet free calls only taking effect after March 2021

Earlier this week we wrote about a 60 minute limit on video calls for the free version of Google Meet coming into effect after 30th September. At the time we pondered whether Google would look to extend the date of effect, and it looks like they’ve decided to do just that.

As such, the 60 minute limit on Google Meet calls for the free version of the videoconferencing platform will only take effect after 31st March 2021.

A recent Google blog post noted as much, explaining that the decision was taken as a result of the pandemic still having an impact on many, as well as the holiday season being on the horizon.

“As we look ahead to a holiday season with less travel and important milestones like family reunions, PTA meetings and weddings hosted over video, we want to continue helping those who rely on Meet to stay in touch over the coming months. As a sign of our commitment, today we’re continuing unlimited Meet calls (up to 24 hours) in the free version through March 31, 2021 for Gmail accounts,” wrote Samir Pradhan, group product manager for Google Meet.

Pradhan then goes on to highlight some of the new features that have recently been added to Google Meet, such as the ability to cast calls to your smart TV, if compatible, for when you have larger meetings. There is also a quiz night-esque Trivia feature, which makes use of the collaborative whiteboard function built into Meet.

You can check out some of these new features in the video below. With the extension being welcome news, hopefully Google does the same should we still be fighting the spread of COVID-19 in March next year.
