Facebook opening new offices in Lagos, expected to open in 2021

While Facebook as a social media platform is available in most African countries, the company only has one office on the continent, based here in South Africa. That is going to change, however, next year, with Facebook announcing its plan to open new offices in Lagos, Nigeria.

The new offices are expected to open during the first half of 2021, and serve as an element of the company’s continued investment in the African region.

“Facebook’s office will be home to various teams servicing the continent from across the business, including Sales, Partnerships, Policy, Communications as well as Engineers,” explains a press release regarding the announcement.

“All across Africa we’re seeing immense talent in the tech ecosystem, and I’m proud that with the upcoming opening of our new office, we’ll be building products for the future of Africa, and the rest of the world, with Africans at the helm. We look forward to contributing further to the African tech ecosystem,” adds Ime Archibong, Facebook’s head of New Product Experimentation.

In recent months we’ve seen the company rollout its SME grant programme in South Africa and Nigeria, aimed at supporting over 900 businesses by providing a combination of cash and ad credits to help small businesses as they rebuild from COVID-19.

While work on that front still continues, given that the fight against the pandemic has not ended, the introduction of increased presence on the continent should come as welcome news to business owners in the Northwest of Africa.

“Our new office in Nigeria presents an important milestone which further reinforces our ongoing commitment to the region,” comments Kojo Boakye, Facebook’s director of Public Policy for Africa.

“Our mission in Africa is no different to elsewhere in the world – to build community and bring the world closer together, and I’m excited about the possibilities that this will create, not just in Nigeria, but across Africa,” the director concludes.

Here’s hoping that is indeed the case.
