We now have a pair of newly refreshed Huawei-branded notebooks following the firm’s Developer Conference earlier today. The devices in question are the MateBook X and MateBook 14, with both receiving new elements before launching in selected markets over the coming weeks.

With South Africa already having the MateBook D series available, we’re focusing on the MateBook X 2020 model here, as it has been quite some time since we’ve seen it locally.

In terms of where it sits in the MateBook hierarchy, it is just below the X Pro, which is still the flagship offering. As such this new X model may be a competitor to Apple’s 12″ MacBook.

So what is it sporting? The first is a lightweight and thin aluminium body. Weighing just over 1kg and measuring 13.6mm at its thickest point. Added to this is a 13″ display that boasts a 3000×2000 resolution and 90 percent screen-to-body ratio.

Internally 10th Gen Intel Core processors are doing the heavy lifting, with an i5 and i7 model in the lineup. There’s also up to 16GB RAM and 512GB storage on both models, but it remains to be seen what specification options will be made available locally.

Added to this is WiFi 6 support, two USB Type-C ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack recessed webcam in the keyboard, as well as a new Free Touch pad that is said to give haptic feedback in a similar way to what Apple does on its latest MacBooks.

No word on when it will land locally, or indeed for how much the new MateBook X will cost, but Huawei’s recommended global pricing starts at €1 599 (~R31 868) for the i5 version and €1 799 (~R35 854) for the i7 variant.

Either way this is a more premium Windows 10-supporting notebook that Huawei is bringing to market.
