Mustek and Rectron offices closed as industrial action intensifies

The Communication Workers Union is currently entering its third day of protest action regarding a wage dispute at local tech distributor Mustek.

As a result of the action Mustek will be closing its doors today but so will its subsidiary Rectron.

“Kindly note that Rectron offices in Johannesburg will be closed from 12pm today, 18 Septemeber 2020, due to the ongoing industrial action at Mustek. This is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of our customers and staff,” Rectron wrote in an email to its customers on Friday morning.

In a statement to ITWeb, secretary general of the Communication Workers Union, Aubrey Tshabalala, said “We are today entering a third day national strike at Mustek. It’s a total shutdown for refusal to bargain with the union. At 10am, they’re going to court to try and interdict the strike. We will be handing in a memorandum to the Mustek CEO David Khan.”

Mustek told ITWeb that deliveries and visitors were prevented from entering its Midrand headquarters and “vehicles attempting to enter are being pelted by protesting strikers”.

The distributor says that the strike contravenes the guidelines for picketing outlined by the Council for Consideration, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

“Due to the current situation, a decision has therefore been taken to please request that there be no physical visits to the Mustek Midrand premises until further notice,” Mustek said in a statement.

Whether Mustek will succeed with its interdict remains to be seen.
