PlayStation 5 games are going to fetch prices of up to R1 299.99

Now that the hub-bub surround the PlayStation 5 pricing reveal has died down slightly (very, very slightly), we wanted to focus on a single line in a press release from PlayStation.

Along with the release dates, game previews and pricing, PlayStation also threw forward to some possible pricing for new games on the console.

“Exclusive titles from SIE Worldwide Studios will be priced at launch from R1 299.99 on PS5,” reads a press release.

That last price is the notable thing here because as you might be aware, many games currently launch with a retail price of R900 or thereabouts.

While an increase may not seem that much it does have us concerned. This is because right now R900 gets you in the door and if you want anything extra, you have to hand over your money.

Our concern here is that publishers will start charging even more for those extras.

However, the other side to this coin is that games have remained at a stable price of R900 for as long as we can remember while the time and pressure required to make those games has continued to increase. Giving developers more for their hard work is a good thing then, so long as that happens and publishers don’t take a massive chunk of the pie.

Something we are looking out for is whether this increase becomes a standard across the gaming sphere.

With that having been said, subscription services are looking mighty tempting with the threat of this increase.

PlayStation did announce PlayStation Plus Collection.

“PS5 owners with PS Plus will be able to download and play a curated library of PS4 games that defined the generation, like Batman Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, Fallout 4, God of War, Monster Hunter: World, Persona 5 and many more. The PS Plus Collection will be an added benefit to the existing PS4 benefits that PS Plus members receive for a single subscription price,” wrote the console maker.

While this is nice, it pales in comparison to Xbox Game Pass which gives you access to launch titles on the release day.

Based on that alone the Xbox might be a more affordable console in the long term given that Game Pass Ultimate would cost as much as two AAA titles for a year long subscription.

Of course, the decision will ultimately come down to what you want to play on the console so keep that in mind when you’re making your decision.
