Spotify is seemingly not a fan of Apple One

Apple has earned itself a few detractors in recent weeks though its not ordinary citizens who have taken issue with the Cupertino firm, but other companies.

Putting aside the Epic Games and Apple tussle happening as we speak, the longstanding rivalry between Apple and Spotify started up again this week.

Shortly after Apple concluded its event on Tuesday evening, Spotify sent out the following statement to media.

“Once again, Apple is using its dominant position and unfair practices to disadvantage competitors and deprive consumers by favoring its own services. We call on competition authorities to act urgently to restrict Apple’s anti-competitive behavior, which if left unchecked, will cause irreparable harm to the developer community and threaten our collective freedoms to listen, learn, create, and connect,” Spotify said via a statement published by Engadget.

The problem here appears to be the newly launched Apple subscription service, Apple One.

Perhaps calling it new is a misnomer as Apple One simply combines all (or a chunk) of Apple services into one subscription fee.

Where things get messy however is in the much talked about Apple Tax.

Developers who illicit payments from users via Apple devices must make use of in-app purchases through the App Store. This comes with the caveat of developers having to pay Apple 30 percent of all transactions made through the store.

While Apple Music and Spotify have been on even footing as regards pricing, Apple wins out because it essentially pays itself the 30 percent cut it takes from in-app purchases.

But now Apple has bundled its services into one subscription and you can now get Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and iCloud (50GB) for $14.95 per month.

That is more than Spotify’s $9.99 for Premium but you get a lot more than just music and podcasts.

It makes sense then that Spotify is worried about the future of its business.

With that having been said though, will people take up Apple One?

The Individual and Family plans are okay but the real value appears to be the Premier tier which offers Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, Apple Fitness+ and 2TB of iCloud storage for $29.95.

At that price though we struggle to see this being taken up en-masse but again, this is an Apple product and generally folks go gaga for the firm’s products.

The question now becomes, will Spotify pull an Epic Games and sue Apple? We will just have to wait and see.
