The Sony Alpha 7C packs full-frame functionality into a new compact body

Later this week, South African photographers will find out a bit more about Sony’s video-focused Alpha a7S III camera, which is currently listed for pre-order around the R66k mark (body only), depending on which retailer website you check out. As we await more information on that flagship camera, there is a new offering to consider with the recently revealed Sony Alpha 7C.

This new mirrorless camera is sporting some familiar high-end components and a full-frame design, with the crucial difference this time around being a new compact body.

Sony is also billing this new offering as an option for professional vloggers too, which seems a tad odd given the vlogger-focused ZV-1 was only revealed in May this year. Add to this the fact that the Alpha 7C is quite a bit more expensive than the ZV-1’s $799 price tag, with Sony slapping a $1 800 (~R29 847) for the body alone.

While we await local pricing and availability info, let’s run through what the Alpha 7C is packing, and whether it is deserving of the price tag.

First the body, which is ultra light at 509g with a battery and memory, but sans lens of course. There is also a flip out 2.95″ screen, which vloggers will likely be wanting. Said screen also supports touch for focus while flipped out, but not for menu navigation.

Internally a 24.2MP 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor is present, which yields 4K video recording at 30fps or 1080p recording at 120fps. Added to this is 5-axis in-body image stabilisation, as well as hybrid phase detection autofocus, so it should prove interesting to see what kind of objects and speed the Sony Alpha 7C can cope with.

Other notable elements include a low-light performance that should be on par with the A7 III (not the S model mentioned at the beginning of this post) with a 100-51 200 ISO range that’s expandable to 50-204 800. There’s also a OLED viewfinder that delivers 2.36 million dots.

Already up for pre-order (body only) on local sites like Outdoorphoto and Orms Direct, but with price to be confirmed, it should prove interesting to see if the Sony Alpha 7C proves popular in an ever-growing premium mirrorless camera crowd.
