Watch Party – a Twitch feature that allows streamers and their audiences to legally watch Amazon Prime Video content together has a group event – is now finally coming to the rest of the world.
This functionality was previously in a closed beta and available only those in the US back in April of this year. As both Twitch and its parent company Amazon are American companies this makes sense, especially because it must have been difficult to wrangle the legal side of things to stream content in this way, even when you’re a behemoth like Amazon.
“Our global creator community has been eagerly awaiting the full release of Watch Parties ever since our closed beta with a small group of creators in October. Well, grab your PopCorn and gather your community, because today we’re officially rolling out Watch Parties to all creators worldwide,” reads an announcement.
The way a Watch Party works is rather clever: a streamer will choose a movie or show on Prime Video and that will be streamed in the main video frame on Twitch. The streamer’s webcam will appear in the top right above chat so that they can still provide commentary to the content and interact with their audience.
This doesn’t mean that everyone is watching for free. Both the streamer and each audience member will need a Prime account to watch. This means that everyone involved is already paying to access the content, but now they can watch it as a community.
As a streamer the steps to get a Watch Party going are as follows, with more details available on the help page.
- Add the Watch Party Quick Action to your Stream Manager
- Connect Watch Parties to your Prime or Prime Video account
- Choose the Prime Video movie or TV show you want to watch with your community
- Go live with your webcam and mic
- Start your Watch Party and enjoy with your community. Snacks: highly encouraged.
The timing of this lines up perfectly with the release of the Amazon Prime Video exclusive The Boys. Its second season goes live tomorrow, 4th September.
The show is even used in this example screenshot accompanying the announcement.
