Twitter explains how security has improved since hack

Twitter is still working to tidy up its internal security measures following a breach back in July.

The social network has been hard at work fixing security holes since the incident and on Thursday it provided an update regarding what improvements have been made.

One of the bigger improvements regards access to Twitter’s internal tools.

The social network says that it continues to strengthen the checks used to verify a team member is meant to access its internal tools.

“We have strict principles around who is allowed access to which tools and at what time, and require specific justifications for customer data to be accessed,” explained Twitter’s chief technology officer Parag Agrawal and data protection officer, Damien Kieran.

Of course, Twitter didn’t explain what these processes are but did explain that it is constantly balancing access to its tools with user privacy and security.

The next improvement is to Twitter’s internal detection and monitoring capabilities.

Again, Twitter doesn’t go into much detail here simply stating these tools are constantly being improved. However, it did state that it has implemented these controls for “high-profile, election-related Twitter accounts in the US”.

While all of these are very vague and don’t help all that much to assure us that Twitter is taking that breach seriously, the firm has invested heavily in educating its staff about security, data protection and privacy.

“For example, we introduced two new mandatory training sessions for people who have access to non-public information. These trainings make clear the dos and don’ts when accessing this information and ensure employees understand how to protect themselves when they are online so they can better avoid becoming phishing targets for attackers,” Twitter explained.

Twitter has also invested in additional penetration testing and phishing resistant security keys that should help to reduce the risk of third party intrusion.

While we understand that Twitter can’t share too much about how it has locked down its house this brief glimpse does help to showcase that its working to secure the back from potential threats.
